Artist's Statement

The material upon which I draw lies almost entirely in the natural landscape. Since the early 60's my main concern in both painting and sculpture has been to create images of landscape.

Human activity and the presence of people does occur, but it tends to be implied. However, in some works I have used many forms representing both human and non-human element - for example, the ankh-like form in 'The sea, surf and sandy coast'.

In attempting to give my sculpture a more evocative character, I acquired pigments which had been designed to produce the range of effects found in my source material. Using these pigments with a cellulose medium, I began to explore their potential in 2D imagery; this led to a long and continuing concentration upon painting.
